August 20, 2009 - Last week we discussed some NFL Preseason Betting Tips, basically some situations to look for when betting on the NFL Preseason. They included teams with new head coaches, quarterback battles and certain team situations. Over the next few weeks, we’ll dive into a couple of teams that fit the profile of an NFL Preseason team to bet on.
New York Jets: It’s a new look for the Jets, with Brett Favre out and heralded USC quarterback Mark Sanchez set up to step in. The quarterback position isn’t the only part of the team getting a facelift; Rex Ryan steps in for the departed Eric Mangini (now head coach of Cleveland), who will no doubt bring a defensive presence in the shadow of his father, legendary defensive guru Buddy Ryan.
The Jets started off with a fantastic and unexpected 8-3 straight up start to the 2008 season, culminating with a 34-13 road win over the previously 10-0 Tennessee Titans. Since that win, the Jets faltered, losing four of their next (and last) five games and shockingly missing the playoffs. In fact, there were more than a few talking heads claiming the Jets were the best team in football after that win over Tennessee, making the subsequent losses to the likes of San Francisco and Seattle that much more puzzling.
As we enter the new 2009 NFL Preseason, we find a Jets team with a new head coach, a battle for the starting quarterback job (between Sanchez and Kellen Clemens), and a hunger from the remaining players to make up for the disastrous ending to last year. It’s a perfect storm for NFL Preseason betting, and definitely a team to follow over the month of August.
